Taking a cruise from Miami: what to do with your rental car
More and more travelers combine a few days in Miami with a Caribbean cruise. The recurring question is always the same: what to do with the rental car during the cruise? Leaving it at the port's parking lot is the obvious choice, but also the most expensive. This guide compares alternatives, shows real costs, and explains how direct pickup and drop-off at the cruise terminal works.
The two departure ports from Miami
Most cruises from South Florida depart from one of these two ports:
- PortMiami — located in Downtown Miami, it's the home base of Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, MSC, Virgin Voyages and Disney Cruise Line, among others.
- Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) — 45 minutes north, home base of Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, several Royal Caribbean and Carnival itineraries, and most transatlantic cruises.
The port depends on your line and itinerary. It appears on your cruise ticket under Embarkation Port and is worth checking before planning your car logistics.
The 3 car options
Option 1: leave the car at the port's parking
The obvious option. Both ports have their own parking lots with daily rates.
PortMiamiUSD 24 / day
Port EvergladesUSD 19 / day
7-day cruiseUSD 133 – 168
A typical 7-night cruise means leaving the car for 8 days (boarding day + 7 nights). That's USD 150 to USD 200 in parking alone, on top of the rental cost that keeps running those days. In general it's money paid for not using the car — but there are two scenarios where it does make sense:
- Long-term rentals with discounted rates. On our longer rentals the daily rate drops considerably, and sometimes the accumulated savings offset the port parking cost. Worth doing the math case by case.
- Leaving luggage or heavy gear in the car. Some clients prefer to board the ship only with what they need and leave bulkier belongings (first-week bags, shopping, fragile items) in the car's trunk. Port parking has 24/7 security and is a valid option if you want to travel light on board.
Option 2: return the car before the cruise and rent again after
Return the car at the hotel (or another point off-port) the morning of boarding, make your way to the terminal on your own, and after disembarkation arrange a new delivery for the second leg. It eliminates the unused rental days but creates several issues:
- Extra transfers from the hotel to the terminal on boarding day (Uber, taxi or shuttle), and from the terminal to the new delivery point on return.
- Two separate rentals mean two pickups, two drop-offs and managing two different contracts.
- Daily rates tend to be higher on shorter rentals, so the savings aren't linear.
Viable, but impractical. The savings on rental days are usually offset by the cost and logistical complexity.
Option 3: drop-off and pickup at the cruise terminal
This is the differential service we offer at ebes. Instead of leaving the car parked during the cruise, you return the vehicle to us at the boarding terminal and, upon disembarkation, we hand you a car again at the same point (or the one assigned for the return).
- Zero parking cost — the car doesn't stay at the port during the cruise.
- Zero transfers — you arrive at the port in your car, return it at the boarding terminal, and come off the ship to find your car waiting.
- One coordinated flow — while technically arranged as two separate bookings under the same account holder (one before the cruise, one after), we manage everything through a single channel so you don't deal with it piecemeal.
- WhatsApp coordination — we confirm the terminal (PortMiami has several: Terminals A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J; Port Everglades has Terminals 2, 4, 18, 19, 21, 25, 26, 29), ship name, cruise line and estimated time.
Real cost comparison (7-day cruise from PortMiami)
| Option | Estimated extra cost | Logistics |
| Port parking | USD 150 – 200 | Simple but expensive |
| Return + re-rent | USD 60 – 120 (transfers) | Requires getting to/from the port on your own |
| ebes terminal drop/pickup | Included in the rate | Fully coordinated via one channel |
Parking costs are reference values based on published rates at the time of writing (October 2026). Official rates can be checked at miamidade.gov/portmiami and porteverglades.net.
💡 A useful note Most cruise lines require check-in between 2 and 3 hours before departure. Coordinating the car drop-off with some margin (e.g. arriving 3.5 hours before) avoids rushing and allows a stress-free check-in.
How it's coordinated
It's a simple process, 100% handled via WhatsApp:
- At booking, let us know you're combining your rental with a cruise.
- Share the embarkation details: date, cruise line, ship name, port and terminal (if you know it — if not, we verify it).
- On boarding day we meet you at the cruise terminal at the agreed time. You return the car and go straight to ship check-in.
- On disembarkation day we meet you again at the terminal with the vehicle ready for you to continue your trip.
Frequent questions
Is there an extra fee for drop-off or pickup at the port?
Yes, but it's already included in the rate when you quote through our website or WhatsApp. It doesn't show up as a surprise charge in the total.
What if the ship arrives late?
We track the cruise and adjust the meeting time. There's no charge for delays caused by the cruise line.
Can I switch vehicles between legs?
Yes, it's handled as two separate reservations: one for the days before the cruise and another for the days after. Common when passenger count or needed category changes on return.
Can you deliver the car at Port Everglades if I returned it in Miami (or vice versa)?
Yes. Even if boarding and disembarkation happen at different ports (common with transatlantic cruises), we coordinate both points.
