Peajes en Miami y Florida: cómo funcionan y por qué SunPass es clave
En Florida los peajes son 100% electrónicos: no hay cabinas de efectivo, ni tickets, ni monedas. Todo funciona con tele-peaje (SunPass) o con lectura de patente. Que tu alquiler incluya SunPass es clave: sin él, cada peaje llega con cargos administrativos que pueden duplicar el costo real. ¿Cómo funcionan los peajes en Florida?
El sistema es 100% electrónico desde hace años. No vas a encontrar cabinas de cobro tradicionales. Al pasar por un peaje, ocurre una de dos cosas:
- Si tenés SunPass pegado en el parabrisas, se descuenta automático de la cuenta asociada.
- Si no tenés SunPass, una cámara lee tu patente y se activa el sistema toll-by-plate: te llega una factura por correo con recargos.

¿Qué es SunPass?
SunPass es el sistema oficial de tele-peaje de Florida — un pequeño dispositivo pegado arriba del parabrisas que se comunica con las antenas de los peajes. Al pasar, el sistema:
- Detecta el tele-peaje en fracciones de segundo (no tenés que frenar).
- Descuenta el monto correspondiente de la cuenta asociada.
- Te deja pasar sin fricción, sin factura posterior.
Con ebes: SunPass ilimitado incluido
Con la mayoría de las rentadoras el SunPass no es parte del alquiler estándar. Los dos esquemas más comunes que vas a encontrar son:
- Cargo fijo diario por el tele-peaje — te agregan entre USD 10 y USD 15 por día, uses o no los peajes.
- Cobro peaje por peaje — cada cruce se te cobra después con un cargo administrativo por encima.

Por qué el SunPass es tan importante
Cuando un auto pasa por un peaje sin tele-peaje, se activa el sistema toll-by-plate. Una cámara lee la patente, el sistema busca al titular del vehículo y le llega una factura por correo con el peaje + un cargo administrativo por cada cruce.

- Precio variable según congestión: puede ser USD 0,50 en hora tranquila y USD 12+ en pico. El precio se muestra en carteles antes de entrar, así que lo ves y decidís.
- Solo funcionan bien con tele-peaje: sin SunPass se procesan como toll-by-plate con recargos altos (o directamente aplican multa en algunos tramos).
- Te ahorran mucho tiempo: en hora pico pueden significar 20-40 minutos menos de viaje.

Tolls in Miami and Florida: how they work and why SunPass matters
Florida tolls are 100% electronic — no cash booths, no tickets, no coins. Everything runs on a transponder (SunPass) or by license-plate camera. If you drive a rental without SunPass, the bill arrives with fees that can double or triple the actual toll. How Florida tolls work
The system has been 100% electronic for years — no traditional cash booths. When you cross a toll, one of two things happens:
- If you have SunPass on your windshield, it's charged automatically from the linked account.
- If you don't, a camera reads your plate and the toll-by-plate system kicks in: you get a bill in the mail with fees added.

What is SunPass?
SunPass is Florida's official transponder — a small sticker mounted on the top of the windshield that communicates with the toll antennas. When you drive past a toll, the system:
- Detects the transponder in fractions of a second (no need to slow down).
- Deducts the corresponding amount from the linked account.
- Lets you through with zero friction and no bill in the mail later.

- Fixed daily fee for the transponder — an extra USD 10-15 per day whether you use the tolls or not.

- Dynamic pricing by congestion: could be USD 0.50 off-peak and USD 12+ at rush hour. The price is displayed on signs before you enter, so you see it and decide.
- They really only work with a transponder: without SunPass they're processed as toll-by-plate with heavy fees (or, on some stretches, treated as a violation).
- They save serious time: at rush hour they can cut 20-40 minutes off your trip.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to do anything to activate the SunPass?

If I drive up to Orlando, does SunPass cover me there too?
